Kyle R
ILS Specialist
Hi, my name is Kyle, and I’m excited to be part of the Self Determined Futures team as an Independent Living Skills Specialist. I have an Associate Degree in Health and Wellness and an Associate Degree in Social and Behavioral Science, and I am currently completing an Associate Degree in Psychology with plans to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology.
I bring over two years of experience as an Alcohol and Drug Counselor at California Men’s Colony, where I supported individuals in developing healthier behaviors, working toward personal goals, and navigating challenging circumstances. This experience strengthened my skills in active listening, empathy, communication, professional ethics, and building respectful, trusting relationships.
My approach to supporting others is person-centered, trauma-informed, and strengths-based. I believe in meeting each individual where they are, listening to their goals and preferences, and supporting them in developing greater confidence, self-advocacy, and independence. My background has given me experience with evidence-based practices, including motivational interviewing and cognitive-behavioral principles, which I use within the scope of my training and role.
Outside of work, I enjoy continuing my education and learning about psychology, human behavior, wellness, philosophy, and the ways these areas intersect with cognition and personal development. I’m passionate about lifelong learning and personal growth, and I look forward to bringing that mindset, along with my behavioral health experience, to the individuals and families I have the opportunity to support.
